ACADEMICS

Kearny’s mission is to provide world-class instruction in a safe and supportive environment, and to ensure that all students are able to learn and achieve their goals.  Class size matters.  This is especially true for the early years.  The average class size at Kearny is 25 students, with two classrooms for every grade level.

Kearny has a growing number of partnerships with Public and Private organizations in order to support a rigorous and diverse curriculum designed to meet the needs of all learners. Critical partnerships are embedded in the school day for maximum impact. Amongst these are: The Wagner Free Institute of Science – St. Joseph’s University SNAP and GEOKids programs, Curtis Institute’s Artist in Residence Program, PAEP’s Arts & Eve STEM program for middle years girls, Rodeph Shalom’s tutoring program for young readers.

SPORTS AND RECREATION

Kearny students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of intramural sports, including soccer, basketball and kickball.  5-8 students can join one of Kearny’s interscholastic sports teams: volleyball, baseball, basketball, soccer and softball. Go Cougars!

Other extracurricular activities popular with Kearny students are art club and Girls Scouts.

CULTURE

Kearny faculty, staff, students and families foster a community of mutual respect where all members recognize and take responsibility for themselves and each other. At Kearny, students are encouraged to “Respect the Rock,” meaning to be: Respectful, On Task, Courageous, and Kind.

Kearny students can be seen receiving recognition for good citizenship at assemblies, marching in a Halloween parade, busting a move at school dances or dancing in the auditorium to Pharrell’s “Happy” at a morning meeting.

FACILITIES

The 2013-2014 school year saw the opening of a new state of the art gymnasium, utilized throughout the year to host after school programs, interscholastic sporting events, and community events. The new wing also contains classrooms for the upper school. Outside, new green space and a playground for the younger students were added. The next big project will include a complete renovation of the cafeteria.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE

Kearny families take advantage of over 20 before and after school programs that provide pick-up/drop-off at Kearny.

KEARNY HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

Kearny has an active Home and School Association. The HSA focuses on parent engagement, organizing events such as the Fall Festival, Spring Concert, a Kids Rock Show, and a Walk-a-thon, supporting classroom and extracurricular activities, and fundraising for the school.
